Abstract/Summary

This action research explored the opportunity for conducting an employee development program for the merchandising staff of FamilyMart Philippines. This was brought upon by solving the current issue of the department of having a mismatch between the skills of the employees versus the job requirement. The goal of this action research is to provide an opportunity for the merchandising staff to be exposed in training that would improve their skills and work output.

I performed a single main cycle of the four-step action research process guided by Coghlan and Brannick (2010) and used Beckhard's change management model as my guide in implementing the intervention. A regular coaching schedule was implemented as a way of training. Informal classroom training was also implemented with the initial topic about negotiation. Knowledge about the process of implementing a training and coaching program had also been generated and documented. Kanter's theory of structural empowerment complimented and aided my understanding of employee development as implemented in this action research. I and my collaborators also generated knowledge on evaluating an employee development program using Kirkpatrick's four level evaluation model.
