Abstract/Summary

My action research is about improving operational performance in the aspect of improving the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in stock recording process. Shell's Hydrocarbon Management KPIs are used to help monitor how well Shell manages its oil inventory and the reported results provide an opportunity to benchmark performance and identify areas for improvement. Since the process was migrated to us, it never reached the target KPIs of stock recording. The project used a Lean Six Sigma methodology or Green Belt methods to identify the root causes and implement solutions. Although the process of my action research has faced challenges because of some resistance during the implementation, the project became successful and up to date, the KPIs are still within the target. Apart from this, the company also benefited from this project as Shell was able to save money from opportunity cost of working capital. In this action research, I learned how to work more effectively with a team and our collaboration is the most important key why this project succeeded. This project made me realize that applying continuous improvement helped improve not only the process but also on the way I think and live my life. I have learned that I may not be perfect but as long as I open myself to changes, I will continually improve. As what Covey (1989) said in his book, The 7 Habits of Effective People, we should keep on sharpening the saw.
