Abstract/Summary

Being in the vehicle rental services business, the need for a vehicle maintenance program is very important. The vehicle is one of our primary assets that bring revenue to the company. We have to manage vehicle maintenance very well because this plays a part in the cost of ownership of the vehicle and our return of investment. With the vehicles getting older as it is being used up almost every day, the need for an effective vehicle maintenance program becomes a necessity.

The company currently utilizes corrective maintenance and scheduled maintenance as a method to maintain their vehicles. However, due to previous breakdowns that it encounters and due to the cost of repairs hinged to it the company decided to adopt predictive maintenance. One of the key steps in adopting vehicle maintenance is the collection of vehicle data every time it undergoes repair and maintenance services. Prior to the action research, the company didnt have success in obtaining the necessary data for the implementation of predictive maintenance. Using action research, the company addressed its problem on data gathering. This was address through actions researchs collaborative approach in solving an issue and doing it in an action research cycle. Along with the action research approach, the company also considered the motivation of its collaborators in pursuing the new vehicle maintenance program that the company intends to have. Also, data gathering and data management techniques were also used in order to serve as guide for the companys first step in predictive maintenance. Given that this is a change on the companys way of doing vehicle maintenance, Lewins framework for planned changed was used. This is intended to ensure the proper implementation and continuation of the vehicle data gathering of the company, which is necessary to provide the information needed for the predictive maintenance.

During constructing, I and the drivers agreed that there we have failed to obtain the necessary vehicle data information for repair and maintenance. To address this, we had a meeting where the importance of vehicle data gathering was explained and the current situation of the company when it comes to vehicle maintenance. The meeting ended with everyone knowing their role in coming up with the necessary data in order to implement the predictive maintenance effectively. The items discussed in the meeting were implemented in the actual operations. During the first month of implementation, I saw that they were able to follow the instructions. It is still early to conclude that it is successful because the first two trials in obtaining vehicle data information also had success in the first few months. Whats noticeable in this third trial using action research is that they become more conscious of vehicle maintenance and they seemed to be motivated and concerned about the vehicles and the company. This was not seen in the two previous trials.
