Abstract/Summary

It is important for educators to evaluate their knowledge of their students in terms of factors beyond academic performance. Such evaluation cannot be complete without the knowledge of their students' self-concepts and the environmental factors that influence them. Only then can they better understand their students.

This paper is an attempt to point out and analyze the most common self-concepts of selected underachievers of Maryknoll High School, Maco, Davao, in contrast to those of the achieving students in the same school. It tries to probe further into some environmental factors that in several previous studies found to be highly related to the students' self-concept. These environmental factors include parents, teachers and peers attitudes towards the students. Banking much on the assumption that one's attitude or behavior towards some group of individuals is an offshoot of one's perceptions towards the group, this study then seeks to circumscribe on the perceptions of parents, teachers, and peers towards the underachieving students taking into account sex and year-level variables. Likewise, since the self-concepts are concomitantly reflected on the individuals overt behaviors, which include academic performance, it attempts to show the extent of relationship between the underachievers self-concepts and their academic achievement grades.

In this particular study, the underachievers were selected on the bases of their mental ability test scores in the school year 1976-1877 as measured by the Philippine Self-Administering Test of Mental Ability and the average of their second quarter rating in all their academic subjects. Then, the instruments: 1) Self-Concept Scale and 2) Child's Self-Description Scale were administered to the parents, teachers, and peers to evaluate the underachievers. The forms contained exactly the same items on which the three groups of raters would base their evaluation or perceptions on the underachievers.

The data gathered were then translated through the application of statistical measures like the mean, frequencies, integration chart, two-way Anova, Duncans Multi-Range test of significant differences of means and t-test for two-samples case.
