Abstract/Summary

Social changes recently have reshaped higher education. Universities across the globe have been in pressures to demonstrate their relevance to the society through commitment and action of responsibility. These circumstances have become the context of entrepreneurial university phenomenon. The phenomenon of entrepreneurial university, however, raises questions of how and why a university becomes entrepreneurial. This research was aimed at finding out the answers. A single-case study was designed to inquire into Ciputra University, a private university in Indonesia which was deemed entrepreneurial. Seventeen participants from different areas of work were interviewed and some sites were visited to collect data. The data were analyzed and concepts emerged. Creating World Class Entrepreneurs is the concept that overarches six categories emerging during the data analysis which all together explain how and why Ciputra University has become entrepreneurial.

The six categories are: entrepreneurial mindset and sense of entrepreneurial identification, redefinition and emphasis on employability, academic excellence through innovation, strong sense of responsibility and accountability to society, massive entrepreneurial activities and entrepreneurial leadership and management. This research revealed that responsibility to the society and country was the reason for Ciputra University to come into existence. Ciputra University aims at creating entrepreneurs through excellent entrepreneurship education to boost economic development of the country. Ciputra University seems to lay the cornerstone of the building of entrepreneurial university in Indonesia. Leaders of higher education institutions in Indonesia then may gain insight into how universities should become entrepreneurial. The encouragement of government for universities in Indonesia to become entrepreneurial should therefore be expected to benefit Indonesian education.
