Abstract/Summary

This action research paper focuses on improving financial management to achieve sustainable funding in nongovernmental organization, namely Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam). This paper also looks into financial management perspective as well as identifies factors that assist or block to development of financial sustainability in DC-Cam. In this research, interview and discussion are used one of the key methods to reveal the in-depth analysis of the collected information about the financial management performance in the organization. I also use the intrapsychic process framework proposed by Schein (1999) and combine with guiding questions by Coghlan & Brannick (2010) to narrative my reflection and reaction from organization. I also follow action research cycle mentioned by Coghlan & Brannick (2010) in this action research. Through this action research, the findings revealed that when the grants were declined, DC-Cam should look to manage the internal resource that could generate more income to supplement the funding shortfall in order to help organization to survive with the financial distress and gradually to attain financial sustainability. Moreover, organization should establish a strong team to do fund raising to tap up new donors and maintain current donors. With the financial sustainability, organization has capability to fulfill its mission and vision. Moreover, research also found that manager concerned about lack of staff and expertise in business approach and needed to instill business culture in organization, however, it is not a big of deal, if the top management decides to improve and implement it.

This action research also provides a general knowledge to other NGOs how they can look to their own internal resources to generate income and contribute to organizations stability when 2 donors decrease their supports in any circumstance. Lastly, this action research would help me to well develop into a field of finance.
