Abstract/Summary

This study investigates the economic, technical and financial feasibility of establishing a woodenware factory in Paranaque, Metro Manila. Data were gathered from the different government and private institutions and from manufacturers-exporters of this type of industry. The study showed that there is a market for the woodenware product with the United States of America's share of 40%, Canada of 7% and Australia of 8% based on the World Export Record as gathered from the World Trade Statistics of the Central Bank of the Philippines. As far as the industry is concerned, it is not really far behind in technology. Although technically it is not yet capable of producing sophisticated equipment thereby relying mostly on imported brands and models, it can attempt to duplicate such equipment. For the time being, locally fabricated machineries will be used for processes that are considered non-critical relative to the overall manufacturing process. To a certain extent, it shall depend on imported equipment and if the need arises where a substantial increase in production is required, investment in imported machineries has to be resorted to. Based on the project return, a high rate of profitability of at least 25% can be ensured. This project will also give benefits, social and economic in nature specifically in the forms of employment generation, taxes and foreign exchange earnings as follows: Employment Generation, 200 Filipinos Taxes of P773,295.00 Average Annually for ten (10) years Foreign Exchange Earnings of US$648,744 in the first year to increase by 15% annually. There are however problems inherent in this project but these are surmountable, viz : a) The unpredictable source of raw materials mainly because there is no reforestation and replanting program by any specific agency in the government. b) The Financial Assistance and the point of view of profitability.

The only method available is to start searching for other sources or types of raw materials from other parts of the country to ensure steady supply and the government support to the development of the industry as well as government control and assistance in the cultivation of raw materials. The presence of the Development Bank of the Philippines appears to be the only institution that can provide the necessary funding for the industry due to low interest charges.
