Abstract/Summary

For almost half a century, ABC has prospered because of the vision and commitment of its founders, Bob Alexander and Bill Conner, to make ABC products available throughout the world and become the market leader in every market we serve. ABC, which started out as a small pharmacy in Fort Worth, Texas in 1947, has become today a US$ 2B international pharmaceutical company specializing in the discovery, development, manufacture and marketing of ophthalmic pharmaceutical, surgical, vision care and instrumentation products. Internationally, it has 200 subsidiaries worldwide Philippine operations commencing in 1970. Similar to its other counterparts worldwide, ABC Philippines has followed this vision and commitment to become the market leader in the ophthalmic field.

For purposes of this paper, discussion will be confined to ABC Philippine only and the local market / industry to which it belongs.

Demand for ABCs comprehensive product line will continue to grow as the Philippine population grows, life expectancy increases, and as advances in medical science take place, and access to healthcare improves. However, the strong pressure from the Department of Health to reduce drug prices, combined with the guarded moderate growth of the Philippine economy given the series of financial and economic crisis affecting the country, and slowly maturing market for ophthalmics, given the intense, given the intense competition, continue to provide challenges to ABC Phils. ABC Philippines strategy to grow in these new market conditions remains steadfast: maintain focus on eye-related products, build on established competence, remain a leader in technological innovation, continuing to provide new, unique products for the eye practitioners.
