Abstract/Summary

A hybridized approach to machine translation is presented, which aims to maximize speci c advantages from two classes of approaches: high-quality translation with linguistic-based approaches, and the ability to learn with corpus-based approaches. A hybrid translation system called HyFilEngMT is the realization of this aim. HyFilEngMT is able to learn grammar-based transfer rules and translation templates from parallel corpora. To translate source text, it uses its rule-based engine wherever applicable otherwise, it uses its example-based engine. A uni cation method is used by HyFilEngMT as an alternative to lexical functional grammar uni cation. Uni cation is essential in maintaining functional well-formedness in the output sentence. The uni cation method corrects transfer errors through a set of uni cation rules that each specify an agreement controller, as described in the derivational approach to uni cation. (Pollard & Sag, 1994). HyFilEngMT is an extension of LEFT, a rule-based translation system, combined with TExt, an example-based translation system. English subject-verb agreement, Filipino nominative-noun, and Filipino nominative-pronoun agreement are maintained in the output sentence by the rule-based engine, which neither LEFT nor TExt were able to address.
