Abstract/Summary
The Philippine Science High School, being a special science high school for the training of the highly superior Filipino youth for a career in science should provide for individual inquiry, intellectual independence, discriminating analysis, originality and creativity. Individual Instruction modules, hopefully will aim to assist the PSHS students to experience some of these opportunities. The I-I modules may guide the students to learn by self-study and thus result in a great gain in their knowledge of basic chemistry.
Therefore, the principal concern of this study is the preparation of individual instruction module on one particular topic of chemistry: the concept of solutions, suspensions and colloids.
At least five students from each of the 6 sections of the first year level of the PSHS participated in this study. The first year scholars of the PSHS tried the I-I modules, while being designed and developed. The module is divided into 12 teaching-learning units or lessons. Each lesson deals on a single, well-defined concept or objective, which is closely related to the understanding of solutions, suspensions and colloidal dispersions. These lessons are arranged in sequence in the order of relative interest and difficulty, which is expected to help increase the retention and transfer of learned knowledge and skills.
The individualized instruction module in chemistry, designed and developed in this study utilized the process approach and guided the students to be independent in learning how to learn. The process approach, an inquiry or scientific method of problem solving and learning had seemingly assisted the students in pursuing independent study in the most efficient way.
