Abstract/Summary

The study described the factors associated with the frequency of suicide ideation and frequency of suicide attempts among HIV+ Filipino males. The research was descriptive in nature and utilized a self-administered questionnaire among 150 respondents who were recruited primarily from HIV support groups in Metro Manila and Metro Davao. Frequency tabulation and cross-tabulation analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 20. Most of the respondents were aged 34 and younger two thirds were college graduate and employed and majority had no current partner. Two-thirds of the respondents were not living alone majority of them were with their parents exclusively with an average of 3.3 other people in the household.Majority claimed that they belonged to an HIV support group, 92.0% communicated with friends outside their support group with an average 16.57 friends. 61.3% were found to have been living with HIV+ for 2 years or less while for every 3 respondents, 2 had diseases other than HIV infection. 74.7% reported to have taken ARV on a daily basis and 9 of every 10 respondents received counseling in the last 12 months. HIV support groups HIV+ peers treatment hubs medical doctors and social hygiene clinics are five most frequently mentioned sources of counseling. Socio-demographic characteristics, social characteristics, HIV infection history, and access to treatment, care and support were cross-tabulated with frequency of suicide ideation. Only one social factor numbers of support group respondents were affiliated with was statistically significantly related with suicide ideation (gamma: 5.309, df=1, p=0.021). Frequency of suicide attempt and frequency of suicide ideation were also statistically significantly related (gamma: 22.58, df = 1, p = 0.000). The findings have implications for research and programmatic interventions among HIV+ men with suicide ideation and suicide attempts in the Philippines.
