Abstract/Summary

This paper intends to impart its business strategy for Concord Block Enterprises, a manufacturer and exporter of rattan, wicker and wrought iron of furniture and furnishings. It will present a short term and long term plan for the business to compete within the industry for the next three to five years. It will show what the company should focus on and what areas need to be improved on for it to continue to grow.

At present, the company's effort is all geared towards its mission of meeting global competition in the furniture business by providing quality products that will be both respected in the domestic and export market. Aside from that is to help the nation in meeting the challenges it faces today by generating the much-needed dollars for our economy. At the same time to support economic growth by providing employment to our fellow Filipinos and lastly, to show the creativity of Filipino ingenuity in the world markets. Concord Block's vision is to be considered as one of the leading Filipino furniture and furnishings manufacturer in the world!

Today, the rattan furniture industry faces a situation far from ideal. Buyers have the luxury of choice from a wide selection of furniture types and designs. They can choose from a wide range of prices to meet their budget. This is also during a time when many consumers are wary of large expenses due to the current economic crisis. There is also a variety of substitutes locally assembled and from abroad made from different materials, wood, plastic, and metal. Furthermore, Suppliers also have the luxury of choosing which manufacturers to deal with given that the supply of rattan and other materials are getting scarcer. Fortunately, threat of new entrants is low, while the intensity of rivalry among existing players has a moderate to high level. This provides local players a little more room to operate. The local manufacturers need to take advantage of this to allow them to exploit the potentials in the foreign and local market. However, this will require adequate capital to modernize operations. It also calls for better control of costs to allow profitable operations.

Although Concord Block Enterprises is recognized with having distinct quality and innovative designs, of furniture and furnishings, the company is still faced with problems such as production. Production costs have been increasing due to the rising cost of materials and labor. In addition, the company is also concerned about their plant capacity to accept additional orders. Given this, it faces a market wherein exports are still growing and there is an untapped potential in the local market. However, furniture manufacturers at lower cost abroad are threatening price competitiveness of local manufacturing products.

Therefore, it is proposed that the company should implement a long-term strategy of increasing economies of scale and building its image here and abroad. A short-term strategy is also presented for the company to immediately implement.
