Abstract/Summary

Packaging Industry

Premium Packaging International, Inc. (PPII) manufactures glass containers. It is one of four domestic glass manufacturing plants of San Miguel Packaging Products (SMPP), PPII supplies the need for packaging for the beverage industry in the Philippines, principally, Cosmos Bottling and Coca Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc.

This paper aims to present the corporate strategies for Premium Packaging International, Inc. to be sustainable in the packaging business for related to the different changes in the macro-environment. Below are strategies:

Proposed Strategies

From the analysis of the changes in the economic, technological and political environment, there are a lot of factors to be considered by PPII on how the business would sustain. These are the proposed strategies that will overcome threats and realize opportunities from the changes in the environment.

1.) Pursue the degree of specialization in light-weighting technology.

Glass containers are perceived to be heavy. The introduction of light-weighting technology to glass manufacturing would lessen the weight of the bottle and this would bring a new feature in glass containers in terms of convenience.

2.) Benchmark cost of producing glass from the local and the international glass manufacturer.

The competition in the packaging industry has intensified in term of prices. The opening of foreign markets has eroded the market share of some of the local manufacturers by low prices. Local customer obviously chooses the cheaper packaging source from the foreign suppliers.

3.) Pursue technological upgrade and repair of deteriorating furnace condition.

The deteriorating furnace condition of PPII is hampering their output. The technological upgrade and repair of the deteriorating furnace would increase production output and efficiency.

In the realization of these strategies, different functions in the company are aligned in achieving their objectives. The three strategies presented above are related strategies that would increase the company's capability to produce glass containers at minimum cost. This would enable the company to be sustainable and competitive in the packaging industry.
