Abstract/Summary
In line with the central aim of promoting an in-depth understanding of counselor application of theory to practice, a qualitative descriptive design was utilized in the present study to examine the presence, nature, and salience of personal counseling philosophies among selected Filipino counselors. Using the purposive sampling method, ten (10) registered guidance counselors from various institutions and counselor education programs in Metro Manila were interviewed and requested to analyze a counseling case using a vignette. The content of the verbatim interview transcripts were analyzed first and from which emerging themes were identified to describe the presence and nature of the present samples personal counseling philosophies. Furthermore, the counselors perceived value of having a personal counseling philosophy and its alignment to the vignette-based case analysis was evaluated using a scoring rubric to determine the salience of the personal counseling philosophies. The results of the current investigation indicate that there is a clear recognition and understanding of a counseling philosophy's purpose and value in practice among the selected counselors. In spite of that, further examination of its nature reveals an apparent preference for combining roles and counseling orientations. Moreover, analyses of congruence indicate inconsistency of adherence and discrepancy between counselors verbalized orientation and actual case analysis. Based on these findings, several implications for counselor practice, education, supervision, and professional development were discussed. Recommendations for promoting articulation of personal counseling philosophies as well as future research on counselor use of theory in practice were also specified.
