Abstract/Summary

This study describes and compares the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of the selected breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding mothers of District IV in Manila, including their knowledge and attitudes towards breastfeeding. Their ages ranged from 18-41 years old. Most of them (50) are in union few (10) are out of union. All the respondents received formal education of which many of them reached high school (47%) and the rest are (53%) college level degree holders. The mothers have an average number of 2 children and many are young (45%) and belong to the 18-24 years old. Their mean age is 26 years old. The study is quantitative and used convenience sampling to gather the 60 respondents (30 breastfeeding and 30 non-breastfeeding mothers). A screening question was included to eliminate mothers with medical problems as a result of non-breastfeeding their children. Youngest child served as survey index. Findings showed that the age of the mother, number of children and knowledge on breastfeeding did not demonstrate any significance on breastfeeding practice among the respondents. However, their employment status, educational attainment, marital status and attitude towards breastfeeding were found to be closely associated with breastfeeding practice. The highly educated, the employed and the mothers who were not in union were not breastfeeding while, the mothers in union, the less educated and the unemployed were found to practice breastfeeding their children. Positive attitude towards breastfeeding was also a significant predictor of breastfeeding among the respondents. High knowledge was not significant in breastfeeding practice, because of other compelling reasons that include, insufficient milk or no more milk supply, inverted nipple and that the baby refuses the milk.
