Abstract/Summary

This paper looks into the heart of the Process Writing Approach, that is, the aspect of Conferencing. Conferencing in the Process Approach deals with rendering of feedback on student writing for better results. Ideally, feedback arises from the teachers and students but with the increasing number of students in every classroom, many have to contend with just looking at their scores wondering the how and why of their marks. This thesis attempts to classify and analyze a combined eighty sample feedbacks from both teacher and peer. Using Beasons (1993) categories of feedback, the researcher aimed to draw significant differences on how evaluators, namely, students and teachers, perceive feedback in the aspect of content and function, that is, the use of personal pronouns and modal verbs. Using Fleiss Kappa as a data measure, the study showed that both teacher and peer feedback on students blogs were characterized by rendering advice on how improve the text, and showing approval or praise. The aspect of function supported the type of feedback common to both teacher and peer feedback samples in that they recognize the innate ability of each individual to improve his or her text given enough time. In summary this study illustrates that feedback is an essential aspect in helping students improve their composing skills. In this technology-driven generation, teaching should evolve to integrate the use of the Internet not merely as a resource of information but as a platform for building skills in particular, English Language skills.
