Abstract/Summary

The study mainly aimed to develop a framework of motivational strategies for Grade Three Mandarin Language Classrooms in Metro Manila. This is to help the participant schools in fostering their students motivation and thus, help increase the likelihood of success in foreign language learning. Case study research method was used to gather data from the participant schools. Each school was treated as a separate case where triangulation was done through the interviews conducted with the teachers and school administrators, surveys given to the teachers, students and parents, and review of existing school documents. Data from the five case studies were cross-analyzed and the strategy scales that were utilized at least weekly by all five schools formed the framework of motivational strategies. Afterwards, the emergent framework was compared with the extant literature. The results showed that the language teachers in the third grade level primarily make use of three macrostrategies, namely recognizing learners effort, promoting students self-confidence, and increasing learners goal-orientedness. They can be applied by other Chinese schools in Metro Manila in enhancing their elementary students language learning motivation. However, other strategy scales must be reconsidered and practiced so as to further increase the pupils motivation and to prevent attrition of the learners positive characteristics. The study contributed to the literature on motivation, language teaching and learning of foreign language in the primary educational institutions.
