Abstract/Summary

This study aims to investigate the needs of the people of Digos and Davao del Sur, and to formulate an educational program to meet these needs through the Holy Cross College of Digos. The background of this study were the findings contained in the three surveys previously conducted in Digos, namely, the Survey on manpower needs of Digos in 1972, the Socio-economic survey of Davao del Sur in 1969, and the FAPE educational survey of the Holy Cross College of Digos in 1973. A questionnaire was sent to three groups of respondents, totaling 145 persons. The first group was composed of 17 business operators, 15 managers, and 15 government office heads. The second group were made up of 16 professionals, 13 community leaders and 15 college faculty members, while 54 college seniors constituted the third group of respondents. To gather data on how the present courses were seen and were affecting the people of Digos, 5 questions were asked and the responses were subjected to the chi-square treatment at .05 level of significance. To assess the present and future needs of the population of Digos and Davao del Sur, 6 open-ended questions were also asked of the three groups of respondents. These questions mainly sought reasons, suggestions, and causes from respondents, and answers were tallied and presented in percentages and ranks to indicate trends in the respondents' opinions which formed the bases for a proposed educational program for the Digos area.

The courses of the proposed program would be short-term but would prepare the students well to meet the demands of industry. The students would undergo a program for apprenticeship before graduation. There would be representation coming from the community in the planning, re-planning, and evaluation of the different programs to guide the school in improving its vocational-technical curriculum. On the whole the programs would help fill the manpower needs of the industry in Digos and Davao del Sur, in general.
