Abstract/Summary

External Environment

Developments in the data processing industry led to the rise of service-centric data processing, where vendors deliver services, such as email, supply chain management and aftercare services (contact centers), among others. Part of the strategy was to transfer operations to alternative locations outside of the country-offshore or near shore, where they can realize substantial savings in manpower costs while not sacrificing the quality of the work that needs to be done.

In Asia, India and the Philippines has been found that, with the proper educational and other supporting bases, these countries can develop a new kind of export sector focused on business services.

The Present Task Environment is described as follows: Threat of new entry is high, bargaining power of suppliers is low, threat of substitute is low, bargaining power of buyers is high and rivalry among competing sellers is high.

Potential changes in the macroenvironment were identified as threats: lobby groups in the US and UK against exporting of services, perceived increase in cost and decreasing supply of labor.

Other potential changes in the macroenvironment were identified as opportunities: the Philippine business legal environment that supports foreign investments, efforts to improve the Philippine workforce and the availability of labor and facilities outside Metro Manila.
