Abstract/Summary
From the nature of the school, the expectations of parents and the apparent needs of the students, it may be assumed that there may be a need for more counseling and for training for teacher-counselors. To verify the factuality of the assumed needs, the study aims to answer the following questions : 1) Is there a felt need for counseling among the students? 2) Is there a felt need for increased counseling competency among the teachers? 3) Can this need be met by an in-service training program? 4) Would the teachers be willing to participate in an in-service training program? and 5) Should an in-service training program in counseling for teachers be proposed such a program to take into account the work and background of the teachers, the needs of the students, the data, and the available resources. The purpose of this study is to construct a proposal for an in-service training program in counseling, for teachers at St. Ignatius High School. In order to do that, a survey was conducted during the month of June 1975 to all the teachers and to all junior and senior students and to two of the three sections of sophomore students. The purpose of the instruments was to obtain answers to the questions posed in this study and to obtain additional information, which might be relevant in implementing the in-service program, or in deciding the program content or emphasis of material to be included. From the survey, a simple majority was considered the cutoff score for determining whether or not an in-service program would be needed or held, and from this, an in-service training program was proposed. The core of the program is a one-week seminar in August, adjacent to the one-week semestral vacation. It is divided into three phases : pre-seminar, seminar, and post seminar and simply focused on building concepts and skills and is limited to the 1976 school year, which in Papua New Guinea ends in mid-December.
