Abstract/Summary

This study aims to appraise the Religion teachers of the Good Shepherd Schools in the secondary level: St. Bridget's College, Batangas City St. Bridget's School, Quezon City and St. Bridget's School, Buhi, Camarines Sur. It also aims to design a three-year development program for the Religion teachers of the aforementioned educational institutions on the basis of the results of the study. The descriptive-developmental research method was used in the study. A set of questionnaires was used as the principal instrument to gather data. The questionnaire for teachers was constructed by the researcher based on the National Catholic Directory for the Philippines (NCDP) and on the Opinionnaire for Teaching Effectiveness of St. Bridget's College. Part I of the questionnaire contained questions appraising the competency level of Religion teachers and their attitudes towards the major dimensions of Christian Faith based on creed, code and cult. Part II is composed of questions on the teaching skills of Religion teachers. The subjects of this study were 4 School Administrators, 3 Religion coordinators, 12 Religion teachers and 90 students in the secondary level of the Good Shepherd Schools. This study was conducted during the school year 1986-1987. The statistical measures used in the data analysis were the percentage, ranking, item mean, area mean and average mean.

The profile of the Religion teachers show that they were good potential partners of the Good Shepherd Sisters in teaching Religion in their different schools. They were in the prime years of their teaching profession and four were professionally qualified to teach Religion. The Religion teachers were competent on the course content based on the major dimensions of Christian faith and in teaching skills. They have positive attitudes on the major dimensions of Christian faith based on creed, code and cult. A planned and integrated approach to the design and the development program for Religion teachers is important in the implementation of the three-year development program for Religion teachers in the secondary level.
