Abstract/Summary

This study intended to determine the effectiveness of strategy training on vocabulary learning of Chinese English majors in business context. It aimed to find out whether vocabulary learning strategy training could contribute to students Business English vocabulary learning and proficiency. Four groups of vocabulary learning strategies, namely: determination, memory, cognitive, metacognitive strategies were included in the training. The students were from two full classroom groups in Putian University in China. Independent samples t-tests were used to measure the difference between the two groups in terms of vocabulary proficiency during and after training. The present study also aimed to investigate the students employment of vocabulary learning strategies in their Business English learning. The overall results indicate that the experimental group outperformed the control group. Strategy training did facilitate the students Business English vocabulary learning. In terms of the differences between using traditional teaching and three groups strategy training (determination, memory, and metacognitive), they did not differ significantly in the students vocabulary learning outcome, while the use of traditional teaching has shown to be more beneficial than cognitive strategy training. Research findings also show that cognitive strategies are the most popular strategies; whereas social strategies are the least favored strategies.
