Abstract/Summary
With the acceptance of the fact that work is the center of human activities in life, a systematic procedure rather than a point-in-time event of choosing an occupation must be the focus in any training institution, if work is meant as more than a method of earning a living but also for achieving satisfaction. Having this concept in mind, the Filipino students indecisive character, seemingly unconcern attitude of their future life career, and the aged-old practice in our culture of family influence on the students occupational endeavor, this researcher proposed a career guidance program in action with emphasis on extensive utilization of the information service and group counseling approach. This move was inspired with the thought that officials of the Division of City Schools, Manila will feel the urgent need for this step at times such as today-when government sectors pool of activities are geared toward an industrialized country. Considering the number of students entrusted to the Manila public schools, the proposal of a career guidance program for the intermediate and senior high school students in the public schools was made.
From the results of the survey as revealed by the questionnaires and checklist given to the subjects of this study, the data obtained expressed the work traits of grades five and six subjects, the vocational problems of the senior high school students as well as subjects needs and how they are dealt with from the counselors point of view. The presented findings determined the kinds of attitudes and problems that the intermediate and senior high school subjects have in relation to career choice. These findings served as the nucleus for setting up a workable career guidance program for public elementary and secondary schools of Manila.
For the purpose of making sound proposals, the developmental concepts on which the program was based are those that the Comprehensive Career Education Model recognized. These key concepts provide the bases for some of the elements in career education such as self-awareness, career awareness, decision-making, and attitudes and appreciation. The objectives based on the four developmental concepts were stated according to the needs of the two levels. The career guidance program objectives to be proposed in this study for the elementary and secondary levels were accomplished through the support of the basic services, which are : Individual, Inventory, Testing, Information, Counseling, Placement and Follow-up, and Evaluation and Research. The information provided for, in the guidance historical background and the results of the survey indicated that there exist well-organized guidance programs in the Division of City Schools, Manila. Further indication of the adequacy of some services like Individual, Inventory, Information, and Testing Counseling, limit the researcher to propose additional activities only to the main services. The activities are based on the needs of the students, their attainability in the existing conditions and their possible contribution to career guidance program in action
