Abstract/Summary

Two Philippine medicinal plants, Jatropha curcas L. and Lagerstroemia speciosa (L.) Pers. were studied for their terpenoid chemistry. Three known compounds, betuladecaprenol (C1a), betulaundecaprenol (C1b) and lutein (C3) were obtained from the dichloromethane extract of the air-dried leaves of J. curcas. The structures of the polyprenols (C1a and C1b) were elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, and confirmed by comparison with the spectral data of betuladecaprenol and betulaundecaprenol reported in the literature. Lutein (C3) was identified by comparison of its 1H NMR data with those found in the literature. Eight known compounds namely, lagerenyl acetate (L14a), 24-methylenecycloartanyl acetate (L22a), tinotufolin D (L3a), tinotufolin C (L3b), sitosterol (L31), sitosteryl acetate (L21b), phytol (L5), lutein (L18) and two possible new compounds (L14b and L22b) were obtained from the air-dried leaves of L. speciosa by gravity column chromatography. The structures of L22a and L22b were elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, while the structures of the other compounds were deduced from comparison of their 1H and/or 13C NMR spectral data with those reported for these compounds in the literature.
