Abstract/Summary
This first part of this study discovers the strengths and weaknesses of the guidance program and formulates recommendations for its modification and expansion. The subjects of the study were 49 teachers and 180 students. The Teacher Inventory Guidance Awareness and the Student Inventory of Guidance Awareness were the instruments used. The services offered by the existing guidance program were Individual Inventory, Testing, Orientation and Counseling. The objectives of this program were geared towards the satisfaction of the needs of the students, nevertheless, it failed to cover the area on financial problems. The specific activities for each service were enumerated but not clearly spelled out. Generally, the teachers and the students were aware of the existence of the guidance program and the overall evaluation of the both groups showed that the guidance services were adequately rendered. However, specific activities of each service were pointed out as weak, and these included: interpretation and communication of the test results, individual counseling, placement, enrichment of informational materials and their accessibility, research and follow-up, proper utilization and dissemination of collected data, and teachers' contribution for the enrichment of data about the individual student. Particular modifications were recommended for the Individual Inventory, Information and Testing services, and expansions for Counseling and Placement services.
Additional service such as research and follow-up service were likewise recommended. The proposed program of modification and expansion specified the objectives, activities, personnel, budget, equipment and facilities needed. The second part of the study proposes an in-service training program for the faculty members, faculty advisers and members of the guidance committee. The Pre-In-service Training survey and the Teacher Inventory Guidance Awareness revealed the needs and interests of the faculty members. There were 58 respondents. The faculty members expressed interest in student-teacher relations, techniques of drawing out students into discussion, group dynamics, teacher's role in guidance, methods of handling common problems, study of students' behavior, occupational opportunities for graduates and drop-outs, dynamics of decision-making, techniques of opening with and opening to others, and ways of spotting students with problems. The different methods suggested were: group dynamics, group discussion, simulation, and case study. The general purpose of the in-service program was to bring to the awareness of the teachers their guidance duties and responsibilities, and to promote wholesome interpersonal relationships among teachers, administrators, counselors, and students. The program consisted of three phases and the usual activities for each session were sharing, group dynamics, lectures, group discussion, and evaluation. The sessions would be evaluated by the participants and the whole program would be evaluated by all faculty immediately after its termination.
