Abstract/Summary
This study determines the effects of Christian Rational Emotive Therapy on irrational beliefs and religious motivation of college seminarians. The study is experimental in design. The individual counseling used was Christian Rational Emotive Therapy (CRET) based on Worthington's (1986, 1989) framework. There were 30 participants in the study of which 15 were in the experimental group and 15 in the control group. Six sessions for each of the participant in the experimental group were conducted with each individual session lasting from 40-45 minutes and each session being at least four days apart. The irrational beliefs namely, awfulizing (exaggerated badness), demandingness (self directed should and other directed should), low frustration tolerance and self-worth were dealt with in the 2nd and 5th sessions. The last session was the summary and learning. The instruments used were the Survey of Personal Beliefs (SPB) by Kassimove and Berger (1996) to measure irrational beliefs, and the Religious Motivation Review (RMR) by Puthenangady (1996) to measure religious motivation. The result showed a significant change in the four irrational beliefs listed of SPB and a significant change only in Factor 2 of RMR in the experimental group. The conclusion was that CRET was able to change basic irrational beliefs and Factor 2 of but not the other four factors of RMR.
