Abstract/Summary
This study aims to evaluate the present guidance services in the high school level of Central Philippine University, and in the light of the findings, make proposals that would improve the guidance program. The normative survey method was used in this study. The subjects included were 404 junior and and senior high school students, who had been in the school for at least two years before the survey was made. The basic instruments used were two sets of questionnaires, the Student inventory of guidance awareness , which was filled up by the students and the Teacher Inventory of Guidance Awareness , which was filled up by the high school faculty members. Both questionnaires were adapted from H. Eugene Wysong's Evaluating Secondary School Guidance Programs : Development and Validation of Instruments (1968). Modifications on the original questionnaires were made to fit the local situation. The high school counselors, guidance coordinator, and the librarian were also informally interviewed to supplement the questionnaire results. In order to find out if the responses of the students significantly differed from each other, the results of the Student Inventory of Guidance Awareness was subjected to the chi square test. It was found that the services that the students were strongly aware of were the Information Service, Testing Service, Counseling Service, and Placement Service. The teachers were aware of the different guidance services offered to the students and rated as strong the assistance given to students in educational and vocational planning, help given to seniors in developing immediate and long range plans, individual counseling and the existence of a standardized testing program.
The weakness that the teachers indicated were: they had not been adequately oriented to their roles in the guidance program, lack of in-service education, they were not informed on the psychological test results of the students, and not making use of the cumulative records in the Guidance Office. It was concluded that the following services need strengthening and improvement: individual inventory service, information service, testing service, counseling service, and follow-up service. The activities recommended to be added to the present activities included in-service education for the teachers and group guidance activities for the students.
