Abstract/Summary
This thesis explores on the cultures, the characters, relationships and issues of Chinese Filipinos written in three one-act plays. The Chinese concept of the Universe is that it is composed of two elements, Yin and Yang, or positive or negative. Anything that is not balanced Yin-Yang wise, will cause disharmony. Positive and negative here is relative for they do not refer to the concept of good and bad per se, but of the concept of opposites. The Yin Yang symbol becomes an appropriate representation for the trilogy since it is about people of Chinese descent. In the lives and situations of the characters in the play, the Yin Yang is the unseen force that weaves in and through their actions and decisions. The definition of Yin Yang is the need to balance the self. The Yin Yang Trilogy, one-act plays on the Chinese Filipinos in English is composed of Question of Worth, Fate's Line and Internal Arrangement .Question of Worth represents the modern Chinese Filipino versus the traditional Chinese Filipino. It also tackles the issue of identity and gender. And it also defines worth from the view of the different characters. Fate's Line represents the sacrifices of a well-intentioned mother. Internal Arrangement represents the connections and the parallels that the past holds to the present.
