Abstract/Summary

The first part of this study evaluates the guidance program of Notre Dame of Kidapawan College. To evaluate the guidance department of the NDKC College Department, library research, personal observations, rating scales, questionnaires, and inventories were utilized. Pertinent information gathered from correspondence with the school faculty and administration, interviews, records of the guidance department, and various Student and Faculty Handbooks were also included in the study. The instruments used in this study were The Administrators' Rating Scale of the Guidance Program, The Teacher Inventory of Guidance Awareness, The Student Inventory of Guidance Awareness, and the Mooney Problem Check List. Four college administrators and the college counselor filled out the Rating Scale. There were 10 full-time instructors who filled out the Teacher Inventory of Guidance Awareness, while 154 students filled out the Student Inventory of Guidance Awareness. The Mooney Problem Check List results indicated that personal-psychological problems were the main concerns of the students followed by adjustment to school work . It was also found that the present guidance services had been accurately selected to meet student needs. There was, however, some gap between the planning and the implementation of these services. The attitude of the faculty, students, and administration towards guidance was found to be very favorable. The administration and the counselor seemed to be aware of the deficiencies of the guidance program, however their ratings were not similar in specific areas. The role of the administrator in guidance was not clear and this caused some confusion in the implementation of some of the guidance services and projects.

The second part of this study evaluates the reading program followed by the high school department of Notre Dame of Kidapawan College. The subjects of the study were the freshmen high school students of NDKC for the school year 1972-1973. The instruments used in the study were The Gates Basic Reading Tests, Level of Comprehension, 1958 edition, Form 2C and 3C for the pre and post tests the 1972-1973 Notre Dame Educational Association (NDEA) year-end Reading I examination and the students' Grade Point Averages in Reading I. To determine the quality of the test items of the NDEA Reading I year-end examination of school year 1972-73, the techniques described in the Chung-Teh Fan item analysis table was followed. The Sandler's A statistic was used to test the significance of the differences between the Pre-Gates and the Post-Gates test scores. The correlations between the Post-Gates test, the GPA, and the NDEA was also determined. The Item Analysis of the 70 items of the NDEA exam showed that 73 percent of the items were found to be acceptable for the high school freshmen of NDKC. There was found to be an indication of predictive validity between the NDEA exam and the GPA since both measured the same skills, and both correlated to a high degree. The results of the Sandler's A study of the students' score on the Gates Reading tests indicated a significant difference between the pre and post test scores. The correlation studies indicated high correlations between the Post-Gates and the NDEA the Pre-Gates and the GPA the Post-Gates and the NDEA and the Post-Gates and the GPA.
