Abstract/Summary
This study aims to provide the students with a simple, clear-cut, and step-by-step presentation of the complete structure of the complex number systems so that the students may obtain an adequate preparation for college work especially in the study of calculus and other advanced mathematics courses. A step-by-step discussion of the complete set of number systems natural, integers, rational, real, and complex was presented. Five lessons were included in the study. The first lesson presented the development of the number system. In lesson 2 the meaning of complex numbers was defined. The graphical representation of complex numbers was treated in lesson 3. Lesson 4 gave the trigonometric form of complex numbers and its usefulness in finding the products, quotients, powers, and roots of complex numbers. The treatment of the exponential form of complex numbers was given in lesson 5. Selected exercises were included at the end of every lesson for the students to grasp the essential mathematical concepts, to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills, and to maintain competence in the material that has been studied. Although the mathematical ideas presented were advanced for the average high school student, the presentation of the lessons was kept simple, geared to a beginner's mathematical experience and maturity, and comprehensible to the student who has achieved a fair mastery of the complete high school mathematics course.
