Abstract/Summary

The adhesive industry is composed of nine generic types namely formaldehyde, contact cement, dextrine and starch, epoxies, sealants, laminating, hotmels, others. The industry is characterized by small to large capitalization, technology-based products and services and keen competition brought by the liberalization law and the growing sophistication of customers.

GRECO- Phils. is in the manufacture of industrial adhesives (contact cement, emulsions and sealants and other complimetary products like the primer) which cater to the needs of industries like the shoe, construction, packaging, printing, wood, furniture and handicrafts. Through technology transfer from its parent company and thorough market research it introduced a wide range of industrial adhesives in the Philippines. It diffuses this technical expertise to its customers and propspectives ones by providing technical assistance, a mark, which made it different from its competitors. Competent and dedicated personnel support the company. Ten years from its inception, it was able to establish strong market, in particular, the shoe industry. It hasd profitable operations and is financially sound.

Despite its strengths, GRECo-Phils. is feeling the heat of competition evidenced by the entry of companies in the grafted and PU adhesives which in the past years was its main domain.

The strategies presented are aimed to address the changes in the environment. It will continue its technological advancement and will now focus in the marketing of its sealant, reconfigure its marketing approach to enhance its uniqueness and defend its market share in the shoe industry. At the same time, it will upgrade its management information system.

in order for the changes in the strategies to be effective, there must be changes in the other areas of the organization. The 7-S framework namely, structure, strategy, style, skills, staff and shared values of McKinsey is a useful tool in implementing the changes. The guiding principle is that all the S's must fir and harminize.
