Abstract/Summary
Zenaida Lim was in her second year of High School when she was referred to the caseworker. Her mother, distressed and upset, complained of her daughter’s poor performance in Mathematics and unsatisfactory grades in all her subjects. Added to this was the school’s complaint of Zenaida’s habitual tardiness for her afternoon classes. In this study, the caseworker poses the following problems: What is the cause of Zenaida’s poor performance in school especially in Mathematics? What is the cause of her habitual tardiness in her afternoon classes? How can the Guidance Councilor and her teachers be of any help to her? After Zenaida had been referred to the caseworker, a series of interviews were scheduled to give her the opportunity to talk. The desire to be of help to Zenaida prompted the case worker to take her as the subject of this study. Data about Zeny was obtained from the cumulative folder, the school records, autobiography, the tests (The Otis Self-Administering Test of Mental Ability, The California Test of Mental Maturity, The Otis Quick-Scoring Mental Ability Test, Differential Aptitude Test, The California Achievement Tests, The Occupational Interest Inventory, Mooney Problem Check List, Malayan Teachers’ College Questionnaire) administered to her, the personal interviews with Zenaida, with her mother, with friends of her mother and with the faculty. All these materials are drawn for a unified picture of the student. On the last part of the paper, some recommendations are given for the counselee and for those under whose care she will be in the future.
