Abstract/Summary

Set Graphics and Printing, Inc. is a medium-sized printing press company that caters to some of the most prestigious business corporation in the country today. The paper aims to provide a strategic plan for the company on the basis of analyzing the environmental and present situation the company is in. The opportunities and threats the company is facing as well as the strengths and weaknesses that company possesses are derived from the environmental and company analyses. Finally, the paper evaluates the alternatives the company can pursue and recommends specific strategies the company must undertake to ensure sustained growth and profitability.

Based on the environment that the company is in, which includes the economy and its industry, the company faces several opportunities and threats. Opportunities for the industry include trade liberalization, industry growth, increasing per capita income, growth in the banking sector, running larger or smaller accounts, aggressive marketing, modernization of equipment, human resource development, market penetration, and the coming elections. Among the threats are volatile foreign exchange, more intense competition, high interest rates, cost-cutting by clients, and poor paper quality.

An analysis of the company which includes a discussion of the 7-Ss lists its strengths and weaknesses. The company provides good customer service, has killed and motivated employees, provides fair compensation, has technical competence, implements sound financial management, and has good equipment. Its weaknesses are decreasing profit margins, poor production systems, lack of strategic management, poor marketing strategy, and being a non-member of the trade association.

Against these strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, it is recommended that Set Graphics and Printing, Inc. undertake a generic competitive strategy of different focus through support differentiation, niche strategy, and penetration strategy.

Operational plans for the different functions have been created to make it possible for these strategies to work. For systems, production scheduling, quotations, and the credit and collection system will be systematized through the use of the computer. As for human resources, a section devoted to this function will be formed to take care of both personnel and development. Marketing and sales activities will be more aggressive. Discounts and incentives will be given to the targeted market segment. There will also be a policy requiring clients to pay within thirty days. Finally, a suggestion scheme will be implemented to foster teamwork and to improve efficiency of the organization.
