Abstract/Summary
This study proposes a formal guidance program for The College of Maasin, Maasin, Leyte. To survey the need for a guidance program, questionnaires were sent to the president of the school, teachers, parents, and students. The questionnaire used was adopted from Sr. Teresita Enriquez (1972), which was modified to suit the school situation. The personal observations of the researcher and references such as books, journals, lectures, and project papers were also utilized as sources of information. The respondents included 193 students, 14 teachers, and 19 parents. The total responses of all problem areas mentioned by each group of respondents were tallied, and the percentages were obtained and ranked. The general attitude of the President of the school, the teachers, the parents, and the students toward setting-up a guidance program was favorable. The survey revealed the need for putting up a formal guidance program. From these findings a proposal for a guidance program was made and the objectives of the proposed program were outlined. The proposed program offered the following services : Individual Inventory Service, Information Service, Counseling, Testing, Placement, Evaluation, In-Service Training, and Follow-up Service. The second part of the study proposes a developmental in-service training for the faculty of the College of Maasin, who are the key persons in the implementation of the proposed guidance program of the school.
Before the proposal was made, questionnaires were sent to all the high school and college teachers of The College of Maasin to survey their needs and attitudes towards in-service training. There were 20 respondents. Books, journals, project papers, and lectures were also utilized as references in the preparation of the proposal. The questionnaire consisted of 18 questions related to student-teacher interaction, competence, preparation, professional growth of teachers, use of instruments, and their involvement in the guidance program. The frequency for each category was recorded and chi-square was computed to determine significant differences in the answers. The survey results showed that there was a need for developmental in-service training. Although teachers were aware of their role in the guidance program, they felt incompetent to carry on their role because they never had training and experience in organized guidance work.
