Abstract/Summary

For the Asian Development Bank Employees™ Multipurpose Cooperative (ADBEMC) to survive in an ever-changing environment, its Board of Directors and Management should formulate strategies grounded on its competitive advantages. Its dismal performance in 1995 (although slightly improved in 1996) is an indication of the urgent need for proactive management style. Among the challenges facing the cooperative are the introduction of the ADB Multipurpose Loan (AML) which offers loans at interest rates much lower than that ADBEMC charges its members, increasing number of disasters whose needs and wants are not satisfied by the Cooperative, and the eroding sustainability of its competitive advantage personalized service which Metrobank (another competitor0 has successfully adopted.
