Abstract/Summary
The study analyzes the Philippine footwear industry particularly the leather footwear sector. Industry analysis focuses on the five forces model affect industry players. These are the threat from potential entrants, bargaining power of buyers, threat from substitutes and rivalry among existing competitors. Leather footwear industry players are not spared from these forces. In fact the industry is very sensitive towards these forces that existing competitors must have in depth knowledge on this and must be ready to face such challenges. Competition in this industry is very stiff because there are a lot of market players. There is also a very big potential for the export market. Shoe manufacturing industry is dependent on another industry which is the leather or tanning industry.
The company is Sotera Shoe Manufacturing a leather shoe manufacturing company owned by Mr. Cecilio Nepomuceno who had acquired his expertise from his father. The study will also focus on this company and the industry forces affecting it. Sotera Manufacturing is located in Marikina the undisputed Shoe Capital of the Philippines. Strengths and weaknesses of the firm were analyzed and how these factors make the company sustain its growth for the past 14 years. Also, the companys opportunities and threats were taken into consideration because it is in these areas that the company is affected by outside forces.
The company at present has its different strategies applied in the areas of marketing, production, human resource management and finance. The strategies were analyzed based on the critical success factors of a shoe manufacturing firm such as Sotera.
Recommendations such as concentration on the production and designing activities of the company instead of doing all the retail marketing of the products, possible venture into the export market, mechanization of some of the processes involved in production and having a clear vision for the companys status were presented which may help the enterprise sustain its marketability and growth.
