Abstract/Summary

This study concerns the development and evaluation of the four modules on Animals in General Science for Grade 1 Pupils. It further evaluates for the effectiveness of the modules based on the achievement of the pupils. The study was conducted for one and a half months, 40 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Forty pupils were randomly chosen among 101 independent readers of Iriga Central School. Three phases were observed in the construction of the modules. The first phase was the planning phase where the review of the Minimum Learning Competencies, review of Bloom's Taxonomy on behavioral terms for objectives and consultations with the experts and other Grade 1 teachers were made. The second phase was the construction phase where the activities on: (a) determination of pre-requisite, concepts and knowledge for each lesson, (b) formulation of objectives, (c) identification of learning activities congruent to the objectives, (d) preparation of the pretest and posttest based on the contents of the modules, (e) writing the lesson, (f) presentation of finished modules for review, and (g) improvement of the modules were carried out. The third phase was the validation of the modules by the 40 selected Grade 1 pupils. The descriptive statistics and t-test were used to analyze the data. This study revealed the following: (1) The four modules are suitable to the reading comprehension levels of Grade 1 pupils (2) Those pupils using the modules have obtained significant gain in their achievement and, (3) The use of modules significantly improved the Grade 1 pupils' attitudes toward science instruction.
