Abstract/Summary

The study determined the outcomes brought about as a result of accreditation in the two accredited colleges of the Daughters of Charity. These outcomes are reflected as changes or improvements in eight areas of concern, namely: College and Community Involvement, Faculty, Instruction, Library, Laboratories, Physical Plant, Student Personnel Services and Administration. The primary sources of data were taken from then Self-Survey Staff and PAASCU Chairpersons Survey Reports from the Preliminary Survey in 1984 through the Re-Survey in 1990.This study used the descriptive-analytic method to trace the history of accreditation in the two DC colleges and to describe their most recent, consistent and common best features, the common points for improvement suggested by the PAASCU Survey Team and the improvements brought about as a result of accreditation in the areas of concern. The latest PAASCU ratings showed that the two accredited colleges are Very Good in the areas of College and Community Involvement and Physical Plant and have Good Faculty, Instruction and Library facilities. As common outstanding characteristics, both colleges had administrators who continuously took efforts to concretize the mission statement through scholarship program for the poor and involved the whole school with the community outreach activities. The faculty were dedicated, loyal and united and stressed the integration of values in their lessons. Instruction offered course-related community outreach activities. Laboratories were clean and school surroundings were

peaceful and wholesome. By fully implementing the recommendations of the PAASCU Survey Team, changes and improvements were made in the eight areas of concern. In the area of College and Community Involvement, the administrators, faculty, students, alumni, various agencies and people in the community of both colleges learned to participatively plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate outreach programs and activities. In the area of Faculty, the two colleges were able to formulate faculty development programs that enhanced the academic qualifications of the faculty. In instruction, procedures and provisions for programs of studies were improved. While there was little improvement in the area of Laboratories at CSCJ, at CSI, there were improvements in the provisions and maintenance of laboratory rooms. Library and audio-visual collection were increased and financial support, qualification of staff, classification of materials and care of physical facilities were improved. In the area of Physical Plant, building services became more functional. In Student Personnel Services, the organization and administration of the Guidance Center together with its co-curricular and counseling services were refined and enriched. There was a significant improvement in the area of Administration when lay persons were included in the composition of the Board of Trustees. In the light of the findings, the following recommendations were proposed: (a) to sustain commitment to accreditation, the two accredited colleges be continuously managed by school heads who value and believe
