Abstract/Summary
The Iskala ng Pakikiisang-Loob (IPL) is a personality instrument aimed at measuring the Filipinos' level of empathy. A total of 22 participants, both professional counselors and counselees alike, joined the three ginabayang talakayan sessions. From their shared ideas on the Filipino concept of empathy came the 151 items which initially composed the instrument. The said items were reviewed by four experts in the counseling field for clarity and appropriateness in the scale. A reviewer adept in the Filipino language was assigned to check on the grammar. A total of 113 items were retained for the pre-try out stage. All counselor participants were purposively chosen. Construct validity of the test instrument was determined through factor analysis and the use of contrasted groups. For the contrasted groups method, the scores of engineers were compared with those of high scorers of the counselor group, t (28) = 12.8, p .01. Item analysis was conducted before the reliability of test was obtained. The reliability was established by way of inter-item consistency and test-retest.
