Abstract/Summary

The choroform extract of Pittosporum pentandrum (Blanco) Merrill yielded a mixture of four sesquiterpene glycosides and another mixture of two triterpenes by gravity column chromatography (dry) packing. The structures of these constituents were elucidated by IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, 1H-1H COSY sprectroscopy and mass spectrometry. On the basis of a formula index search, the proposed structures of the compounds are novel. The relative stereochemistry of the sesquiterpene glycosides were determined by a combination of coupling constants analyses and NOESY. The sesquiterpene glycosides were acetylated, and the derivatized products were analyzed by 1H-NMR to confirm the proposed structures.
