Abstract/Summary

The twelve year-old Virgilio Po, has been poor in academic performance. He consistently gets low marks and is very passive in his studies. Virgilio's father referred the boy to the caseworker. The father expressed his worry about the poor grades of Virgilio. He did not exactly know whether to blame his son or not for his low marks. He noticed that his son prepared his lessons like his other brothers and sisters everyday. He also remarked that Virgilio was lagging behind his other children in his studies. The caseworker promised to find the possible causes of Virgilio's underachievement. The caseworker aim to solve the academic problems and personality adjustment problems of the counselee, which manifest in low achievement and feelings of inferiority and insecurity. A series of interviews were then conducted with Virgilio's teachers, with his friends and classmates, with the director of a religious organization, and finally with the immediate members of his family to look for possible reasons for his apparent underachievement. After gathering sufficient data about his academic performance and also his personal behavior in and out of class, Virgilio was interviewed informally. Then, some psychological tests were administered as basis for obtaining relevant information necessary for the study and for interview material for adjustment. These standardized tests on intelligence and achievement were : Otis I.Q., Beta Form, California Achievement Tests Complete Battery, Elementary Form W,Mc Call-Crabbs Standard Tests Lessons in Reading, California Test of Personality and Draw-a-Person Test. With these data and observations made by the caseworker concerning Virgilio's personal behavior, a tentative diagnosis and a plan of treatment were formulated.
