Abstract/Summary

This study aims to develop a more comprehensive faculty development program for the Basic Education Department (BED) of CIC-Cebu, to help improve teaching competence and student learning. It made use of the descriptive-developmental research method which involved a documentary analysis of data inclusive of the existing faculty development program, the findings and recommendations of the PAASCU re-survey teams in the areas of Personnel and Instruction, and the results of the teachers' evaluation given by the students, subject area coordinators, and the principal. It also made use of a survey technique wherein a development needs questionnaire was distributed to the faculty. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed through the use of descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, and means. The entire population of 63 full-time faculty members of the Basic Education Department were the respondents of this study. The teachers' profile showed that on the basis of teaching experience and length of service to the institution, an intensive and sustained induction program is necessary because of the presence of a large number of new teachers and, on the basis of graduate units earned, support of the teachers' initiative and concern for growth is essential.

On the basis of weaknesses and needs identified through data gathered from extant documents and a questionnaire, the findings point to a need for a program that is geared towards an integrated development of the teachers. Analysis of the weaknesses and needs revealed that there were common items found in all the four sources: 1) the use of varied teaching strategies 2) internalization and integration of the school thrust, social teachings, and Christian values and 3) media processing. These implied that a large repertoire of skills in the use of different teaching techniques has to be developed, including infusion of values important to the institution. The other items that surfaced in two or three of the sources were recollections and retreats, fellowships and gatherings, and educational tour. These, along with some other needs that surfaced, were summarized and grouped according to three areas of development: personal/spiritual, professional, and social/cultural. The proposed program was developed on the bases of the identified needs.
