Abstract/Summary

This study was conducted to determine the effects of a two-day values clarification program on the purpose in life of college students in St. Anthony's College. It was hypothesized that after the two-day values clarification program, the change in PIL gain scores (pretest-immediate posttest: pretest-delayed posttest) of the experimental group will be significantly higher than that of the control group. Secondly, the change in scores (immediate posttest-delayed posttest) of the experimental group will be significantly higher than the change in scores of the control group. Lastly, the program, as an effective factor in influencing the purpose in life of college students will maintain its positive effects up to twenty days after the program was given. The Solomon four-group design was employed in this experimental study. Subjects who participated were the Commerce and Civil Engineering students. Forty participants were gathered using the stratified random sampling method. From the population of 410 students in both departments, 10 students (8 males, 2 females) came from the Engineering group, and 30 students (8 males, 22 females) from the Commerce group. These people were randomly assigned to the four groups (E1, C1, E2, C2), each group having 10 students. An attitude scale, Purpose in Life test, was used to measure the participants' concept of their own lives. To determine the significant differences in the scores of the students' PIL tests, t-test for independent samples was used. Analysis of variance was utilized to test the significant effect of the treatment.

Data showed that the experimental group has significantly higher values in the mean change scores from pretest to immediate posttest, and from pretest to delayed posttest (M=19.4 M=21.3) as compared with the control group (M=4.6 M=3.5). The immediate and delayed posttest gain scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than the change in scores of the control group (t=2.42 p0.05). The two-day values clarification program was found to be an effective factor in influencing the PIL scores of students and has maintained its positive effects twenty days after it was given F0.05. The participants' individual rating of the program also confirmed its effectiveness: 7 (35 percent) = very highly effective: 11 (55 percent) = highly effective 2 (10 percent) = adequately effective.Considering the results of the findings, it was concluded that the values clarification program has been an effective approach to enrich the life perceptions of the participants, as shown in their PIL change scores. Furthermore, the 2-day program maintained its significant effects on the attitudes and behaviors of the subjects as attested by the results in their delayed posttest scores.Further studies are recommended to determine the long term effects of the program. Educators are also encouraged to undergo the strategies and skills presented in order for them to become more productive and integrated persons while they are in the process of helping their students grow into mature and worthy individuals.
