Abstract/Summary
Cytogenetic investigation of sand goby, Oxyeleotris marmorata Bleeker 1874 obtained from two areas in West Java, Indonesia was undertaken to determine the modal chromosome number and fundamental number to construct the karyotypes from somatic metaphase cells of the head kidney and to describe the morphometric and meristic characters. A total of 60 fish samples were sacrificed for direct chromosome preparation by colchicine-citrate-aceto-methanol-air drying-Giemsa staining techniques. A new karyotypic formula of 2n=46 (4 submetacentrics or SM + 42 acrocentrics or A) was known in this eleotridine gobioid from Java, aside from the earlier formulae reported from Thailand (Arai & Fujiki 1979) and India (Manna 1989).Morphometric and meristic investigation of O. marmorata was also undertaken. Results show that linear relationships exist between TL and BW (body weight) as well as TL and other morphometric dimensions obtained in different body points of the test fish. The dimensions from snout to first dorsal fin (D1) and tail length (posterior end of second dorsal fin or D2 to the tip of the caudal fin) are the most preferred variables that could substitute TL in breeding experiments. It can be summarized that samples from Cirata reservoir and Parung ponds are drawn from the same stock. This was based on the karyotypic and morphometric analyses done on representative samples.
