Abstract/Summary

The study determines the predictive validity of the entrance test and the grade six general average using the first year high school cumulative grade point average (GPA) as criterion. The subjects in the study were the 281 second year high school students of Don Bosco Technical College, Mandaluyong during the school year 1990-1991 who took the entrance test in January to April of 1989. The entrance test scores, the grade six general average and the first year high school cumulative GPA of the respondents were the basic data used for statistical computations. The descriptive correlational design was used to determine the relationship between the grade six general average of the students and their entrance test scores with their cumulative first year high school GPA. The scores of the subtests in test two were correlated with the average grades in Communication Arts, Mathematics and Science. All statistical test was set at .01 level of significance. The data revealed that the correlation coefficients obtained between the pairs of variables were positive. This means that the entrance test (Mental ability test r = .605, Achievement test r = .646, and Aptitude test r = .355) and the grade six general average (r = .788) were valid predictors of the criterion variable which was the cumulative first year high school GPA. The predictor variables were, therefore, valid admission criteria.
