Abstract/Summary

The objective of this study is to present "slices of business and administrative realities" which can be used as a teaching vehicle in the graduate schools of business administration. This study illustrates problems encountered by three firms in the Philippines: 1. The Automotive Parts, Inc. (besieged by labor problems, the speedy resolution of which was affected by the Philippine judiciary system, and the strike had repercussions on overall operations of the company and management). 2. Philippine Ceramics, Inc., (the company's objective was “to take advantage of the growing export market, mainly the United States and Australia). Accordingly, successive expansion programs, they have to look into the overall management of the company to insure a continuing growth and maximize profits) 3. Lawrence and Company, Inc. (The company remained mostly a trading concern during its less than a quarter-of-a-century existence and carpet manufacturing started only in the early 60’s. The carpets business had never shown a profit since it’s founding until the division manager took over in 1969 and showed that the business could be profitable. The study illustrates the problems encountered by a company with no clear-cut objective and whose relationship with the parent company had not been well-defined. It also shows how a new manager tackles numerous problems in the business in directing its course).
