Abstract/Summary

This study compares the trimester system and the semester system of education in the Graduate School of Education at De La Salle University (DLSU) with emphasis on the following aspects: student enrollment, withdrawals or failures, grades, perception of students of their in-school and out-school life, their general opinion toward the trimester system and other effects of the trimester system worth considering. The researcher made use of the descriptive-comparative and formative method or model for the study. Pertinent data from school year 1979-80 were compared with those of school year 1980-81 or 1981-82's data. Two semester data were used to find out whether there is consistency in the semester findings. The subjects of this study were the students of the Graduate School of DLSU main campus. These were the students who took up courses under the semester and the trimester systems. From the population of the Graduate School of Education students, 60 were randomly chosen to serve as the respondents or the representative of the whole department. Data were collected from the files of the Graduate School of Education Registrar's Office. One instrument used in the study was the Trimestral Evaluation Questionnaire prepared and validated by Dr. Melecio Deauna. Another instrument used was the Learning Environment Inventory, also prepared by Deauna. The statistical approaches employed were the Test of Proportion, Test of Proportion on the weighted means and Kendall's Tau Test.
