Abstract/Summary

The study deals with the spectroscopic properties of the complex dichlorobis-N,N'-diphnylthioureacobalt (II) in acetone, in acetonitrile and in absolute ethanol. It was found out that the complex assumes a pseudo-tetrahedral configuration in all three solvents. The spectral changes upon the addition of oxidizing agents like potassium ferricyanide and sodium dichromate as well as reducing agents like oxalic acid and sodium thiosulfate to solutions of the complex in the different solvents are also reported. The formation of a binuclear bridged intermediate is discussed based on the shifts of the ymax of the solutions after certain time intervals. Kinetic studies of the reaction of the complex with potassium ferricyanide in ethanol as solvent at room temperature were made at a wavelength of 390 nm. The study showed that the reaction is a pseudo-first order innersphere reaction with a rate constant of 5.34 x 10-4 min-1.
