Abstract/Summary

The purpose of the study was to develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of an Anxiety Reduction Program. The subjects of the study were 36 novices who were undergoing initial religious formation and can be said to possess a certain amount of anxiety. Immediately following the Program, the participants were asked to evaluate the Program's effectiveness. A posttest using IPAT's Anxiety Scale Questionnaire was administered to the experimental and control groups 10 days after the Program was conducted. A delayed posttest six weeks after the immediate posttest was administered both to the experimental and control groups. A follow-up evaluation was done by the participants immediately following the delayed posttest. The t-test for correlated samples was used to show the mean differences between experimental groups A and B's pretest and immediate posttest, immediate posttest and delayed posttest. The t-test for uncorrelated samples was used to show the mean differences between experimental group A and control group C's pretest, immediate posttest and delayed posttest experimental group B and control group C's pretest, immediate posttest and delayed posttest. Results showed that the subjects in the experimental group A that had relaxation response for treatment and experimental group B that had the complete Program Treatment were able to demonstrate reduced anxiety (p .05) in their immediate posttest while the control group failed to demonstrate such reduction of anxiety. The results of the immediate posttest showed that the Anxiety Reduction Program (ARP) was effective. Results suggested further replication of the Program on another group of novices.
