Abstract/Summary

This study analyzes and determines the predictors of the values of the high school students of four selected Diocesan Schools in the Diocese of Abra. The descriptive-correlational method of research was used in the study. The existing traditional values of the students of the four selected Abra Diocesan Schools were surveyed and the independent variables related to and predictive of the said vales were determined. The students enrolled in four secondary Diocesan Schools of Abra during the school year 1986-87 comprised the population of the study. There were 285 student respondents, chosen randomly from four selected Diocesan schools, namely St. Paul High School, Catholic High School of Pilar, Little Flower High School, and St. Mary High School. The CYRC Filipino Adolescent Students' Value Scale, developed by the Social Development Research Unit of the Child and Youth Research Center (SDRUCYRC) of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports was the instrument used in the study. The values analyzed in the study were family solidarity, respect for tradition, authoritarianism, social acceptance and economic security. The independent variables of the study were order of birth in the family, number of siblings in the family, composition of the family, number of friends, membership in school clubs or organizations, residence while studying, and marital status of parents.

Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that the value education program of each of the respondent schools needed to be strengthened. Only a few of the independent variables were significantly related to traditional values. Also, there were variables other than those analyzed in the study which can predict the students' regard for the values analyzed in the study.
